I am back from a lovely weekend in Indiana.  I taught at The Doodlebug on Friday and at Paper Chase on Saturday, in addition to the Copic Certification Class on Sunday.  Truly, these were some really nice and fun ladies.  I was exhausted every night - but each day was well worth it.  :)

I've been doing some work behind the scenes in preparation for CHA as well as finalizing details for teaching trips through the end of January.  I really like to have everything in order before the hurricane otherwise known as CHA hits.  LOL!

Upcoming Classes

South Carolina

All three workshops for Saturday, November 21st at The Stamping Place only have 1 or 2 spots left.

Texas

We are finalizing selection for the workshops that will be offered on Friday - Saturday, Dec. 11 and 12th.  There will be a Copic: What? How? & Wow? on both days for sure.  The other two will likely be finalized by tomorrow.  It will be inky... ;)

Also, if you aren't aware of it, we added a second date for the Copic Certification Class in San Antonio.  There are just so many of you!  The new location is the Doubletree Hotel.  Because of the larger venue (and more supplies added) we are able to take more applicants for both days.  Hurry up and submit those applications!

Florida

Yes, I finally have a location for Florida.  After much surveying and gnashing of teeth, it was determined that the MOST Copic Dealers that were looking to get certified were on the West Coast.  So our location is Sarasota, Florida.  The registration process will begin on November 10th.  Stay tuned!

California

CHA-Winter is held in Anaheim, California each year.  I will be working, working, working (ah, it's just too much fun to call work!); but I've also talked to one store about teaching a Copic: What? How? & Wow? workshop (or two) before the show.  Stay tuned and more information will be posted when it is available.

Flipping it over and ruffling it up a bit...

Rusty Things

I attended a workshop with the fabulous Keith Lo Bue at the Art Is...You retreat in Connecticut this past weekend.  It was not unlike my prior workshop experience with Michael deMeng; another artist whose style doesn't suit me -- but oh, are the techniques a blast.  Now don't get me wrong - I can appreciate what these fine, fine artists make.  I would run to take another workshop with either of these men.  I will post more on that experience later -- when I actually finish the piece.  It has really good beginnings - but needs more work.

I just look around the room at the varied and sundry rusted items being utilized in the art works and know that I prefer to take new things and make them look old or antiqued rather than start in the rubbish bin or 'found objects' discarded at the town dump.  That in itself is a good discovery.

Ruffled Things

But I do get the discarded fabric sample books from my local upholstery shop.  They give them to me whenever they discontinue carrying a line.  The objects aren't old, per se, but they are 'found'.

Combine that with the thing that Keith got through to me the most was to PLAY with your objects.  Turn them over in your hand and look at them from other perspectives and let them sing to you.

It's amazing how that one idea affected today's card project!

I received inspiration from the Moxie Fab World (Paper Crafts Magazine) blog to work with ruffles today.  http://www.moxiefabworld.com/2009/10/moxie-fab-world-challenge-not-your.html

I took out a gorgeous sheet of stitched mulberry paper with trim from Prima.

And proceed to flip it over and inspect if from other angles.  Lo and behold, the stitching on the reverse really appealed to me too.  It provided great contrast to the stitched elements on the front.  And the trim?  Gotta have it for this card.

So I cut off the trim with about a 1/4" bit of paper on the side.  I trimmed out a piece of the mulberry paper where the stitched design of a single flower and stem would remain intact.  Then I chose another section, flipped it over and trimmed out a layer for my card from the reverse.

The reverse-flipped paper is a gorgeous cream mulberry similar to the color of the stitching.  I took the edges of this piece and dipped them in Glimmer Mist (Old Lace) and ripped the edges to expose that wonderful mulberry edged look.

I took one of my fabric sample books and found a lovely cream eyelet piece.  I ripped this out of the book and proceeded to the sewing machine.  Now folks, I cannot sew.  Or more accurately, I'm simply not taking the time at this point to do more than hit that foot pedal and make a straight(?) line.  But I do know that if I don't knot my ends (which I never do), I can pull on the loose threads at either end to ruffle it up a bit.  This, in combination with FABRITAC (which is known as 'Fabritaculous' in this household) - will give me a ruffled effect for my cardfront and a base for the card.

So I glued down the fabric and layered on my piece of sequined, ruffled trim over the top of my poor-girl's ruffles.  On top of this goes the reverse mulberry (cream) and then the silhouetted stitched flower from the 'right' side of the paper.

To the stitched flower stem I added two Say It In Crystals centers.  Gosh, they are gorgeous.  A chipboard corner, a little wire word (Fabritaculous again) and some bridal floral pieces from Michaels to embellish.  And at last a little Old Lace Glimmer Mist over the top and it's done.

A perfect card for a true friend.

Texas in December

And now I must return to the administrative portion of my day.  A quick shout-out to all who are applying to attend the Copic Certification Class in San Antonio, Texas.  We added a second day AND I moved the event to a larger venue.  So keep on applying...be open to Sunday (12/13) or Monday (12/14) -- and remember that I will be teaching consumer classes at Stamp Antonio Arts on Saturday (12/12) as well, if you would like to take advantage of these.  One or more of these will be Copic: What? How? and Wow! and an airbrushing-centric class -- so make it a weekend with me!  More even funner (I can't get my kids to stop saying that, so I'll just join them!) details to come.

Some Fun News

As of today I have been working full-time for Prima Marketing, Inc. for a month.  I'm the Director of Special Projects, which means I get to dabble in the far-flung and fantastic so you will be seeing a lot of fun things coming forth from now and leading up to CHA-Winter in Anaheim.

I continue to work with Copic, Ranger and Tattered Angels as an endorsed/certified educator - so from the travel-teaching perspective - nothing has changed.  After all their stuff works so nicely with our stuff.

And that's it for today.  See what happens when I don't post for 14 days?  Goodness!

We do have some half-day spots for a different fee on a case-by-case basis. Class Goals and Outline

The Copic Certification Class encompasses education of the most important aspects of Copic's product lines and includes hands-on education of product knowledge, blending techniques, answers to common problems and how to test and select your inks and papers.  We will show you how to demonstrate, teach and sell Copic products.  You will receive a complete curriculum filled with reference material, techniques and class instructions, as well as a teacher’s kit of products for demonstration (valued at $85.00 US MSRP) which includes one of each type of product from these lines.  You will have an opportunity to use all of these products hands-on as we cover their function and differences between each one.

• You will learn about three common mistakes and how to identify, test and use your materials.
• You will learn four different blending techniques.
• You will learn how to create texture and erase mistakes
• You will learn how the markers are labeled - with what I personally like to refer to as The Copic Periodic Table of Colors.
• You will learn how to choose colors that work well together from the Copic Color Wheel - which I personally refer to as the Galaxy of Copic Colors.
• You will have an opportunity to airbrush with both the ABS-1 and the Air Compressor / ABS-3 setup and understand how each works.
• You will have the opportunity to network with other peers in the industry

Certification is geared towards store owners, employees, designers and instructors in the paper crafting industry.  Attending class covers all of these topics.  But remember, if you are not able to attend a certification class near you, that almost everything that is taught in the class is covered on the Copic Product Specialist's blog, which is currently located at ilikemarkers.blogspot.com. There are a few tidbits that I elaborate on more in the class than what is on the blog, but I know that for people who avidly read the blog and practice what is covered there - then the certification is a lot of repeat.  If something is talked about in certification that is not on the blog it's mostly because Marianne hasn't gotten around to writing it up yet.  Many of the attendees do not have a chance to follow the blog, so the class is geared as a summary and intro to everything Copic and stamping-related.

 

While certification is not an art lesson or a place to make samples or projects, it is a chance for learning techniques and seeing up close how it works- the little "a-hah! that's what I was doing wrong..." kind of things so that you can build upon your skills with the information that is presented during class.

 

If being certified isn't as important to you as having a hands-on class and opportunity to learn about Copic markers or if a certification class is full, you may have the opportunity to attend a consumer class at that same location on the day before.  Many locations at which I have booked the certification classes have chosen to have me come in a day in advance to offer 2-hour workshops, such as "Copic: What? How? and Wow!".  Perhaps this will suit your purposes instead?  Contact the stores listed to see what they may be offering prior to the certification event.

 

People who take this class will be listed on our website as instructors who have completed training. It is still up to you to practice on your own and take the skills you learn and apply them to your own work.

 

This is a technique-based class. We will NOT make finished samples. Rather, I suggest that you make a Sample Book with techniques and color combos that you like during the class, or take the small images you work on and turn them into projects later.

 

A typical class runs:

9 am to 10:30  Papers, inks, and product overview (Basic Overview)

10 min break

10:40 to 12:30 pm  Coloring, 4 blending methods, and the colorless blender

1 hr lunch break – Lunch is NOT provided

1:30 to 2:45  Blender effects, altered media, ink effects,

3pm to 4  Airbrushing, Q & A, signing of certificates

 

Supplies

You class fee includes an information packet with lots of useful literature and guides. There will also be a paper sampler in your packet. Most of the flyers and information sheets are downloadable off our website, and you can request copies of specific flyers for your future events by sending an e-mail to  nancy@copicmarker.com

 

Also included is a product packet. This is a sampler for you to use for teaching or demo purposes. Each packet includes:

1 Various ink

1 Spica Glitter Pen

2 Multiliner SP pens

1 Big bottle of blender solution (this will have to go in checked luggage for those flying)

• Your own papers or inks to try (I bring plenty of my favorite, please test your own)

• Embellishments to alter or Airbrush (die-cuts, metal, silk flowers, etc)

 

We will be using Sketch Markers. If you choose to bring your own markers make sure they are marked so they do not get mixed in with my classroom sets.

 

What if I have already taken a Certification Class and I want to take it again?

I usually have a few spaces for people like you in each class. If you haven't already contacted me about this, then here's the scoop:

1. There will be a small fee. This helps us cover catering and room rental, etc.

2. You don't get a new packet unless you want to pay full price. Likewise, no new certificate, sorry.

3. Please let me know at the same time I open registration to everyone that you are a REPEAT. That way I don't figure you into my class size limit the same.

4. When you come, please help the people around you. Especially with those 4 pesky blending techniques. Those slow down the class the most and having someone else at the table who can help is greatly appreciated.

5. Please bring your own markers and have them labeled. It takes me a while to check my classroom marker sets after each class and refill them, which I factor into the class cost.

6. If you can't make it to the whole class, then please enter/exit at the breaks so you're not disrupting me (it's too easy to sidetrack me as you know!)

You will have an opportunity to airbrush with both the ABS-1 and the Air Compressor / ABS-3 setup and understand how each works.

Certification is geared towards store owners, employees, designers and instructors in the paper crafting industry.  Attending class covers all of these topics.  But remember, if you are not able to attend a certification class near you, that almost everything that is taught in the class is covered on the Copic Product Specialist's blog, which is currently located at ilikemarkers.blogspot.com. There are a few tidbits that I elaborate on more in the class than what is on the blog, but I know that for people who avidly read the blog and practice what is covered there - then the certification is a lot of repeat.  If something is talked about in certification that is not on the blog it's mostly because Marianne hasn't gotten around to writing it up yet.  Many of the attendees do not have a chance to follow the blog, so the class is geared as a summary and intro to everything Copic and stamping-related.

While certification is not an art lesson or a place to make samples or projects, it is a chance for learning techniques and seeing up close how it works- the little "a-hah! that's what I was doing wrong..." kind of things so that you can build upon your skills with the information that is presented during class.

If being certified isn't as important to you as having a hands-on class and opportunity to learn about Copic markers or if a certification class is full, you may have the opportunity to attend a consumer class at that same location on the day before.  Many locations at which I have booked the certification classes have chosen to have me come in a day in advance to offer 2-hour workshops, such as Copic 101.  Perhaps this will suit your purposes instead?  Contact the stores listed to see what they may be offering prior to the certification event.

People who take this class will be listed on our website as instructors who have completed training. It is still up to you to practice on your own and take the skills you learn and apply them to your own work.

This is a technique-based class. We will NOT make finished samples. Rather, I suggest that you make a Sample Book with techniques and color combos that you like during the class, or take the small images you work on and turn them into projects later.

A typical class runs:
9 am to 10:30  Papers, inks, and product overview (Basic Overview)
10 min break
10:40 to 12:30 pm  Coloring, 4 blending methods, and the colorless blender
1 hr lunch break – Lunch is NOT provided
1:30 to 2:45  Blender effects, altered media, ink effects,
3pm to 4  Airbrushing, Q & A, signing of certificates

Supplies

You class fee includes an information packet with lots of useful literature and guides. There will also be a paper sampler in your packet. Most of the flyers and information sheets are downloadable off our website, and you can request copies of specific flyers for your future events by sending an e-mail to orders@copicmarker.com

Also included is a product packet. This is a sampler for you to use for teaching or demo purposes. Each packet includes:
2 Copic Markers
2 Sketch Markers
1 Wide Marker
1 Various ink
1 Spica Glitter Pen
2 Multiliner SP pens
1 Sketch Blender Pen
1 Big bottle of blender solution (this will have to go in checked luggage for those flying)

All other supplies are provided, however you may wish to bring the following:
• Your own stamps or stamped-off images
• Your own papers or inks to try (I bring plenty of my favorite, please test your own)
• Embellishments to alter or Airbrush (die-cuts, metal, silk flowers, etc)

We will be using Sketch Markers. If you choose to bring your own markers make sure they are marked so they do not get mixed in with my classroom sets.

What if I have already taken a Certification Class and I want to take it again?
I usually have a few spaces for people like you in each class. If you haven't already contacted me about this, then here's the scoop:

1. There will be a small fee. This helps us cover catering and room rental, etc.
2. You don't get a new packet unless you want to pay full price. Likewise, no new certificate, sorry.
3. Please let me know at the same time I open registration to everyone that you are a REPEAT. That way I don't figure you into my class size limit the same.
4. When you come, please help the people around you. Especially with those 4 pesky blending techniques. Those slow down the class the most and having someone else at the table who can help is greatly appreciated.
5. Please bring your own markers and have them labeled. It takes me a while to check my classroom marker sets after each class and refill them, which I factor into the class cost.
6. If you can't make it to the whole class, then please enter/exit at the breaks so you're not disrupting me (it's too easy to sidetrack me as you know!)

CARD: Seize the Daisy ... and the Certification Class too!

This is the last week/weekend for soccer and lacrosse practice and games.  The kids have had a nice season, but I'm ready for less weekend comittments.  On the weekends that I am home, I just want to chill with my kids and perhaps go to a waterpark or do playdates.  I abhor schedules when it comes to family time!  Today is the one exception to that guideline.  We call it "Trauma Tuesday" -- the one day of the week where I allow crazed after school activity and sports schedules to run amok.  We pay on Tuesday, but in return we have schedule-free Wednesdays through Fridays.  It's a good thing.

This past weekend was the Heirloom Productions Stamp Expo up in West Springfield, MA.  I did not attend.   Not for not wanting too - but family time is a precious commodity with my traveling schedule.  So I'm blog hopping to Pat and Sue's posts, etc. to see the show vicariously through their eyes.

Let's see - so I got some happy mail yesterday - including some adorable stamps from Faerie Song.  I had heard of this company from a stamping friend of mine, a local lady named Sue that is well known published in Vamp Stamp News and a great teacher.  Once I saw these images, I knew my wallet would be lighter.  I purchased Bryony and Kyra, and a couple of images off the other plate.  I like this artist!  So I stayed up until 2:00am no less coloring her.  :)

 

How much better does it get?  She's adorable, sitting on a slip of the moon, with flowers, pretty hair, wings, etc.  Love it!

New Sketch Colors

The rumors are true.  Copic is coming out with 12 new colors, that will be available in the Sketch style marker and Various ink refills only.  This will bring the new total number of colors available to 334!

There is no official U.S. release date (yet).  The colors will be available for viewing at The CHA Trade Show in Orlando at the end of July.  Hopefully we will have more information then about when they will be available for ordering.

These colors are PALE and lovely - perfect for a light touch of color and blending too.  The new colors are:

LAYOUT: You Were Meant to be Mine

I've been wanting to play with Prima's Artful Cardboard product for a while - so I took some time while the kids were doing their homework yesterday afternoon, to experiment.

I love this picture.  Bri was just 8 months old and at that perfect giggly, grab her toes and chunky little wrists stage.  Neil and I couldn't have been more over the moon with her at this point!  I always reflect on these first year pictures and think about the long struggle we endured to have children.  It may not look so on the surface - but my gaggle of gigglers took years of TTC and IVFs.  We are truly blessed.

I really liked using the Artful Cardboard as a basis for this page that featured both my husband and my (then baby) daughter.  The texture is just enough to offset the pink and make him like the page too.  LOL!   To roughen it up a bit more, I traced the large frame that is printed on top with an exacto knife and peeled it up at the edges a bit.

I used my Copic Markers to color the metal heart embellishment.  It started off a more pewter color.  I added RV25 / RV29 to the heart and BG07 / BG78 to the wings.

  

I cut out the words from a Prima Watercolor Paintables sheet and brushed on Patina, Creme de Rouge and Sweet Pea Glimmer Mist to mimic the lighter pattern in the Prima Flirty Little Secret paper. 

I also used this combination on the large white dotted swiss patterned flower in the upper right.  What a difference a little Glimmer Mist makes!

I used the packaging border strip as a template for cutting out a light pink version from my cardstock and layered these two on top of a torn strip going horizontally across the page.

Finally, I layered some Essentials flowers that match Flirty Little Secret with Artful Collage Leaves and Build a Bauble gems.

I'm going to be prepping for classes for the rest of the day as I'm flying off to OHIO tomorrow to teach workshops and a Copic Certification Class hosted by Toyrifix in Smithville this weekend.  The Certification Class is full, but there are still a few seats remaining for the two Copic 101 workshops and the Glimmer Mist / Prima Card Buffet on Saturday.  Contact the store at 330-669-3737 to register for the Saturday workshops.
